In Guatemala, the school year runs from January to October and in the town of Chichicastenango, December is the time of the annual festival that can wipe out much of a family’s savings.
The Guatemalan ministry we work with called ASELSI has been putting on a Christmas party for years. They invite people to come, receive a gift for their kids, hear a musical presentation of the Gospel message and leave with a bag of food too.
This activity has been pretty popular, but this year ASELSI decided to do things a little differently.
They asked area schools and churches (including our Little Disciples Bible Study) to select 10-20 kids from needy families and invite them to the Christmas Party. The gifts this year were focused on school supplies. Each kid who received a ticket left with a backpack with school supplies, like pencils, rulers, dictionary and most importantly — a Bible.
About 1100 people came with 350 backpacks being delivered to kids who will be better equipped for classes that start next month. As for the family members who accompanied these elementary school children, they all heard the message of Chirstmas and how God gave Jesus to save us.
Seventeen people accepted Christ during this event and the local churches and ministries will be able to follow up with these new believers.
From our Little Disciples group there were about 22 kids who were able to participate in the Christmas celebration. That’s some of them with Michael and Hudson while they waited to get into the event.
Here’s a video of the activity:
